Donations

Post 55 is your local post of The American Legion.  Since September 1919, our post, with our community's support, has served local veterans and veteran-centric organizations through fund-raising, community events, and individual support. Being a non-profit organization, our Post must rely on membership dues, rental fees, and donations to keep the Post running and available to serve our Veterans, our Veteran’s families, and our community.

Membership in The American Legion is open to all who have served federal active duty in the United States Armed Forces since December 7, 1941, and have been honorably discharged or are still serving. They volunteer their time several times during the year to raise funds, support local veteran events, and support our youth through various programs.  One hundred percent of the funds generated during these events goes back out to support our local Veteran community.

Your donations in support of the Post and its mission are greatly appreciated and are needed to ensure we can continue our mission of service.

Brick Program

Bass-Bowen-Brittenham-Bundy-Franklin-Knox, Post #55, initiated a Brick Program to honor past or present members of Post 55 and Post 142, as well as any other special veteran or active-duty Service Member of the U.S. Armed Forces. The bricks can be engraved with up to three lines of text and the text can identify his/her service affiliation with rank, unit identification and/or period of service. The names of U.S. veterans’ organizations may also be engraved on the personalized bricks. Each line of the engraved bricks can accommodate up to 18 spaces (including characters, spaces, punctuation, and dashes/symbols).

The cost for a personalized 4” x 8” brick is $100.00, with the funds from this program going to help maintain our Post home and assist local veterans and their families. The bricks will be installed along the edges of the existing sidewalks. If enough bricks are purchased, they will be placed around the Post flagpole and an additional path may be created from the door on Woodford Street, past the Naval gun, and to the doors on Fall Hill Avenue.

In addition to the placing of the brick, each donor will receive a Donor Certificate.

Poppy Program

After World War I, the poppy flourished in Europe. Scientists attributed the growth to soils in France and Belgium becoming enriched with lime from the rubble left by the war. From the dirt and mud grew a beautiful red poppy. The red poppy came to symbolize the blood shed during battle following the publication of the wartime poem “In Flanders Fields.” The poem was written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, M.D. while serving on the front lines.

On September 27, 1920, the poppy became the official flower of The American Legion family to memorialize the soldiers who fought and died during the war. In 1924, the distribution of poppies became a national program of The American Legion.

Each year members of The American Legion Family distribute poppies with a request that the person receiving the flower make a donation to support the future of veterans, active-duty military personnel and their families with medical and financial needs.
